PLAYERS: 1-2 simultaneous

PUBLISHER: Nintendo

DEVELOPER: Nintendo

GENRE: Arcade

RELEASE DATE: June 1986

They're the Mario Brothers, and plumbing's their game. definitely in 1983, before there was any mention of princess toadstool or the Mushroom Kingdom or Koopa, the Mario Bros. were two regular joes simply making an attempt to earn a living, and Mario Bros. reflects simply how low-income  living was.

Both brothers run around in an underground, pipe-riddled world, stopping turtles, crabs, flies, and ice from chewing up the sewers. The creatures will solely be hit from the bottom up. Once hit, they flip over on their back and may be done away with (crabs take two hits - one hit solely makes them crazy and demon-possessed). Coins are often collected for points. Fireballs can appear if you have been on a platform for far too long.

Once completed 11 stages of pest management, the stages begin to repeat with no end in sight. Eventually, Mario and Luigi notice that their lives are insignificant. they may attempt to keep the sewers pest-free till they die, however it would not matter as a result of the sewers, by definition, will never be clean.

They discuss amongst themselves what actions they might take. Should they register at the community college, take some business courses, and take a look at to hunt out an improved life for themselves? Certainly if they could open their own plumbing business once the entire Donkey Kong debacle, they could move into additional profitable ventures; property, capital investment, international banking – careers wherever the cash would flow as quickly because the 5 o'clock sewer tide.

Once twelve punishing hours of head-banging,  blue-collar insanity, the Mario Bros. come to a call. They obtain sewer mushrooms and eat them together. The remainder is hallucinatory history.

I will give this game a 6 out of 10 for the fact of reputation is to robust in this game, although cant expect much from a very classic game.

Nintendo Entertainment System

Welcome to the NES

The NES is the first console that Nintendo produced. Nintendo started out as a company that produced arcade systems and games. This was step that made Nintendo the company it is knowing as today.

The NES was a console that could play nearly all of the arcade games that Nintendo had previously released. This console offered people to play the arcade games they loved at home in a single machine.

NES Emulator

The NES emulator allows you to play this old console and its games on either a PC or on a new console. What ever is your preference. I will be showing how to do it on a PC. I will eventually show how to do it on the Wii.

The emulator i suggest for this is the emulator called FCEUX Click the link here to find where to download the emulator.

NES Games/Roms

In order to play NES games on the emulator you must first download Roms. You can find the games you are looking for at the following links:
  1. CoolROM
  2. DopeROMs
Find the games you wish to play.

How to Load the Games/Roms

First open the emulator. Then at the top right of the emulator window is the tab called "File". Click File. Then go to open rom. Navigate to where you have saved the Rom files. Choose the game you wish to play.

Have fun playing these old games that have hours of fun for you to enjoy.

Super Mario Bros Review

Published by Nintendo 1985 for the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System)

Not only did this game define platform gaming as we know it, but few games have ever surpassed Super Marie Bros in terms of fun and addictiveness. The game's imaginative levels, tight control, and sheer variety are simply amazing for a 1985 release. Its familiar music and bright, inviting graphics are permanently etched into so many childhood memories.

Mario can bash blocks, dash, swim, pounce on enemies, and kick turtle shells into groups of oncoming foes. With the help of power-ups, he can double in size, hurl fireballs, or gain temporary invincibility. These power-ups are crucial to your survival in this game.

There's ample room for technique and numerous secrets to discover. Coins are found all over the place, and collecting 100 earns you a extra life. Each world consists of four stages, the last concluding with an encounter with Mario's dragon arch-nemesis, Bowser.

You can't save your in game progress, but this is partially remedied by secret warp areas that allow you to skip ahead to advanced stages. In addition, you can continue by holding the A button when you restart a game. In addition to seeing how far you can get, the game is also fun to play for high score.

If you haven't played this brilliant game in a while, you owe it to yourself to see how super Mario bros has withstood the test of time like few others can.

Since this game game me so much entertainment and frustration for hours (truthfully days). Was first time playing this game, I had played the sequels but never this game. I had to play it on an emulator but since playing this fantastic game I am seriously considering purchasing the NES to enjoy this game with the classic and memorial console controller.
I will give this game 5 smiley faces out of 5 for the amount of enjoyment I had playing this.
If you wish to either enjoy this game for the first time or revisit it you can get it here or here.

Gaming Using Emulators

What are Emulators and Roms

Emulators: Emulators are small computer software that enables a user to play retro games on their PC or modified console. There are many emulators for each console and choosing which emulator to use can be difficult. If you’re using a console for the emulator there is not as big of a selection of emulators to choose from.

Roms: Roms are the "game" files that are used by emulators in order to play the game. e.g.  Roms are like the game and the emulator is the console. But the difference is you don't put the Rom in the emulator, you achieve this virtually by opening the Rom in the file options tab of the emulator.

Here are my suggestions for emulators with the associated consoles. I have categorized them for ease.

Nintendo Consoles

  • NES- FCEUX or Jnes
  • SNES- Snes9x
  • Nintendo64 - Project64 or Mupen64
  • GameCube-  Dolphin

Nintendo Hand-Held Consoles

  • Gameboy, Gameboy Colour and  Gameboy Advance - Visual Boy Advance
  • Nintendo DS - NO$GBA

Sony Consoles

  • PlayStation - ePSXe
  • PlayStation 2 - PCSX2

Sony Hand-Held Consoles

  • PSP - PCSP

Sega Consoles

  • Sega Mega Drive (US name Sega Genesis) - Gens
  • Sega Saturn - Satourne
  • Sega Dreamcast - Chankast

Atari Consoles

  • Atari 2600 - Stella
  • Atari 5200 - Atari800Win PLus
  • Atari 7800 - ProSystem
  • Atari Jaguar - Virtual Jaguar

Various Consoles

  • Xbox - Xeon
  • Commodore 64 -  CCS64

Where to Find Emulators and Roms

I suggest CoolRom and DopeRoms for downloading Roms and emulators. I use these sites but there are many more you can choose to use, its just a matter of searching for them.

For my mac user friends here is a simple link for you to download emulators. No choice really pretty straight forward.http://coolrom.com/emulators/mac/

Where to Begin

Welcome to Retro Gaming

Here is a list of things required to play retro games
  1. Interest in this style of games
  2. Time to spend
That is all their is needed to begin venturing back in time to when games where all about challenges and solving the giving problem where you could shut yourself off from the rest of the world.
Of course in order to play the games you must have some way to actually play them. Here is a list of ways to play them. You can use a single way or multiple depending on your know how or preferences.
  • Emulators and Roms on laptop/desktop
  • Actual console and games
  • Backwards compatible consoles
  • Emulators and Roms on new consoles
Each has their own pros and cons which I will explain here for you to decide which method suits you best depending on your needs.

Emulators and Roms on Laptop/Desktop

These is by far the easiest and quickest way to begin your adventure back in time to retro games. All you have to do is find the emulator that matches up with the console you desire to play.
Example Mupen64 is the emulator name for the Nintendo64.
Roms are just the name of the file giving to emulator games. This is as simple as searching for the game itself.
Pros:
  • Fast and easy
  • FREE
  • Can speed up the game
  • Can play it on you PC
Cons:
  • Not quite the same feeling as playing it on the console
  • Download limit. NB can get a bit carried away with downloading loads of games

Actual Console and Games

This can be the easiest way if you already have a working console with the games you wish to play. There is no need to do anything else if this applies to you. But as I know for most people including myself this is not the case. As mentioned in the "about me" I did break my NES cause it needed a bath lol.
Pros:
  • Easy to play the games
  • Get the enjoyment of playing the games the way it was designed to be played
 Cons:
  • Can be costly to get the console and games
  • Difficult finding games
  • Also finding a TV/screen which is compatible with the console

 Backwards Compatible Consoles

This does not apply to every console. These are consoles which allow you to play the older games on them. For example the Playstation 2 could play Playstation games.
Pros:
  • Can be easier and better playing the games this way
  • Similar feeling as playing them on the original console
  • Extra games for the fore-mentioned consoles.
Cons:
  • Limited to a smaller selection of games compared to emulators
  • Newer consoles are more expensive in most cases
  • These consoles are knowing to burn out quicker

Emulators and Roms on new consoles

This is not for the average person as this involves modifying your console. This can be enjoyable because you have increased your selection of games to play for said console instantly.
Pros:
  • Increasing choice of games to play for your console
  • Get to play old games on the big screen with no extra wires
  • Use of a controller instead of keyboard and mouse
  • Games are free
 Cons:
  • Can brick console during modifying.
  • Repeat possibility of bricking the console
  • Not easy to do for certain consoles.
  • Most difficult way of all the methods
  • Lack of feeling of playing games the way they were meant to be
I hope these help you begin your adventure back in time in regard to gaming. Maybe you will play childhood games that you have desperately been thinking about re-playing or just playing games that you never had a chance to play.

PS. I use all of the fore-mentioned methods and I enjoy playing these retro games more than recent games. Mean reason being I can just flick through my list of a few hundred games and choose what genre I feel like playing at that precise moment. Sometimes revisiting old challenges or dealing with challenges I never encountered before.
